Nnamdi Kanu reiterates 14 days ultimatum to herdsmen, hails South East govs

Nnamdi Kanu, an acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Tuesday commended the Southeast governors for heeding his call and placing a ban on open grazing in the region.

Recall that the Governor of Ebonyi State and the Chairman, Southeast Governors Forum, Dave Umahi had reiterated the ban yesterday.

This followed Kanu’s ultimatum to Southeast governors to ban open grazing in the region.

Reacting to the ban, Kanu said the Eastern Security Network, ESN, would ensure the enforcement of the ban across the Southeast.

Kanu spoke through the National Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful.

A statement by Powerful reads: “We, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, ably led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to salute the courage of South East Governors for heeding our leader’s call to ban open grazing in the region. We received with delight the news of a statement credited to the Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum, Dave Umahi, to the effect that open grazing has been banned in all states of the zone.

“IPOB wishes to acknowledge the wisdom of the governors to respect the people’s will for the first time. If the governors had not been seized by useless fear and trepidation over the Fulani before now, our region wouldn’t have been in this mess.

“We, therefore, want to aver, and assure the governors that our gallant Eastern Security Network, ESN, will ensure strict enforcement of the ban which is also in line with a subsisting but neglected judicial pronouncement in 1969. At the expiration of the two-week ultimatum already issued by our Leader for open grazing to end in Biafra land, IPOB and ESN will move in to deal with any herder flouting the law.

“Since the law enforcement agents are too weak or have wittingly failed to enforce the ban, we can no longer afford to sit idly and watch the wanton destruction of lives and crops of our people. ESN will do the needful. We shall no longer allow lawbreakers to have a field day after inflicting physical and economic harm on innocent victims.

“The 12 Northern Muslim States already have their Hisbah police enforcing their Sharia law, yet they claim Nigeria is one. Alcoholic beverages worth millions of Naira belonging to Biafrans doing their legitimate business in those states have been callously destroyed by these overzealous elements and nothing happened. Yet some wicked mortals masquerading as herders are daily openly grazing their cattle on our farms, kidnapping our folks for ransom, killing and raping our mothers and sisters. The security agents not only show blind eye to these unimaginable criminality but sometimes provide cover for the perpetrators.

“We, therefore, wish to remind all herders in Biafra land that the era of occupying our forests and grazing on our farms is gone. They have to vacate our forests and relocate to cities where other human beings live. Wandering about with cows can no longer be tolerated on Biafra soil. Anyone interested in cattle rearing will either build a ranch as obtained in civilized societies or leave Biafra land. Do not say you are not warned!

“We advise all herdsmen in Biafra land irrespective of their tribe to restrict themselves to the law of the land or relocate to regions where open grazing is allowed. Our patience will elapse after the expiration date of the 14-day ultimatum by our Leader.”

N7.1 billion theft: Nigeria Senate’s Chief Whip, Orji Kalu returns to Court

N7.1 billion theft: Nigeria Senate’s Chief Whip, Orji Kalu returns to Court

Nigeria Senate’s Chief Whip and former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu will on Tuesday be arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo’s Federal High Court for a ‘de novo’ trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in the last twelve years prosecuted Kalu from the Federal High Court up to the Supreme Court and as sentenced to 12 years imprisonment before his lawyers in mid 2020 secured judgement for a ‘retrial.’

Tuesday’s trial would have Senator Orjin Uzor Kalu docked before trial Justice Inyang Ekwo on money laundering related charges to the tune of N7.1 billion.

The lawmaker, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007 was earlier found guilty and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

The trial judge averred that Kalu laundered money through his personal company, Slok Nigeria Limited, alongside Abia State former Director of Finance, Jones Udeogu.

Having spent months in Nigeria’s Correctional Centre, Lagos, the entire Court’s proceedings were again quashed in a unanimous judgement of the Supreme Court on 8th May, 2020 on the ground of the trial judge’s lack of jurisdiction to try Kalu at the time.

The Supreme Court’s judgement maintained that Justice Mohammed Idris, was already elevated to the Court of Appeal, as at the time he sat and delivered judgement against the Defendants (Orji Uzor Kalu and others).

Kalu’s defence Counsels picked holes in the conviction of their client, stating that it wasn’t part of the Court procedure to have a trial judge already elevated to the Court of Appeal to stoop lower to the Federal High Court to sit in judgement, hence, they pleaded that the Supreme should declare Kalu’s conviction a nullify.

The Supreme Court held inter alia: “The fiat that was issued to him by the Court of Appeal President pursuant to section 396(7) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, was a nullity.”

It further ordered that the charge in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CR/26/2017, which EFCC entered against Kalu and his co-defendants, should be remitted back to Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for re-assignment to any other judge for the trial to commence de-novo (afresh).

See you in court Isreal’ – DJ Cuppy sues Davido’s PA for libel, defamation of character

Popular Nigerian Disc Jockey, DJ Cuppy, has revealed that she’s dragging Davido’s Personal Assistant, Isreal, to court for alleged libel and defamation of character.

Recall that Israel of DMW had earlier came out to give reasons behind singer, Zlatan Ibile and DJ Cuppy’s fight.

According to him, trouble started after DJ Cuppy in 2019 released a hit song ‘Gelato’ featuring Zlatan which made waves at the time.

Things became sour between both artistes which led to DJ Cuppy outburst on social media after she was blocked by Zlatan on every platform.

Zlatan, who kept mute, made things worse on Thursday as he denied ever knowing DJ Cuppy during an interview.

This got Nigerians talking as some criticized Zlatan for his response.

However, Isreal, Davido’s Personal Assistant, in a post via his Instagram account, commended Zlatan for his response, revealing that DJ Cuppy was a fake friend.

Why I supported Yar’Adua in 2007 despite ailment – Obasanjo

Why I supported Yar’Adua in 2007 despite ailment – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he was aware of the late President Musa Yar’Adua’s health challenges before supporting him to emerge presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007.

Obasanjo stated this on Sunday during a virtual interview with academic and historian, Toyin Falola.

The former president said his actions were based on advice from medical expert that the late president was medically fit.

Recall that barely 3 years after his victory at the poll in 2007, Yar’Adua died in office in May 2010 due to kidney failure.

Nigerians had several times accused the former president of always supporting weak candidates for selfish reasons.

Recall also that Obasanjo was a key supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 general election against the then incumbent president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Being a great opinion leader, Obasanjo was able to influence Buhari’s victory.

Buhari also took ill in 2016/2017 leaving his seat almost vacant for medical attention in London.

Obasanjo, however, stressed that he had no deliberate intension to support weak candidates as alleged by some Nigerians.

According to him: “Let me tell you the story of Umaru Yar’adua. I knew he was ill and before I put him forward, I asked for his medical report which he sent to me and I sent it to one of the best doctors of our time and a good friend of mine who died only last year –Professor Akinkugbe.

“I said look at it because it is confidential and he said to me that from this report, this man has had a kidney transplant and it is successful, he is no longer under dialysis.

“And if you have a kidney transplant and it is successful, it is as good as if you didn’t have a kidney transplant at all. I accepted that and Umaru Yar’adua contested within the party and he contested within the country and came up.

“Within a couple of days, he came back and reported that he was checked up and he was well”.

Obasanjo expressed hope that God would vindicate him and judge those accusing him of selfishness in his political engagements.

Demand for oxygen increases, as Lagos records more cases

Demand for oxygen increases, as Lagos records more cases

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said that the demand for oxygen by coronavirus patients has increased to 400 cylinders per day.

Sanwo-Olu made this known on Sunday in a statement while updating residents on the management of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the State.

He reiterated that oxygen was free in all Lagos State-owned COVID-19 treatment centres.

“Considering that oxygen demand has spiked to between 300 and 400 cylinders per day across state-owned treatment facilities, the government is working hard to ensure availability.

“To this end, a second oxygen plant is under construction at the Gbagada General Hospital and will come on-stream within the next seven days.

“It is expected that this will boost the in-house capacity and availability of oxygen across all state government-managed treatment centres,´´ NAN quoted him as saying.

Sanwo-Olu added that the Lagos State Government was making efforts to transform the state-owned isolation centre in Gbagada into a fee-paying facility that people could elect to be treated at.

He said that the decision was due to the growing clamour by patients and families who were willing to pay for COVID-19 treatment, but would like to do so at a cost that was lower than what was currently obtainable at private facilities.

“This means that the COVID treatment facility in Yaba will continue to offer free and high-quality treatment to all persons.

“Gbagada centre will offer treatment at a moderated and affordable cost to those who wish to take advantage of extra offerings like private treatment rooms and more personalised levels of care,´´ Sanwo-Olu said.

He said that the government established a telemedicine service, EKOTELEMED, for patients who were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms that did not require admission and could, therefore, be managed in the comfort of their homes.

The governor said that EKOTELEMED was manned by well-trained medical personnel and available on a toll-free line, 08000EKOMED (08000356633).

Sanwo-Olu encouraged as many people as possible, whose cases fell in the asymptomatic or mild category, to take advantage of the EKOTELEMED service.

Meanwhile, Lagos state recorded the highest number of the new cases with 355 infections in the country on Sunday. the state now has a total of 49,274 confirmed cases and 314 deaths.
