Juventus manager, Andrea Pirlo, has defended his decision to substitute forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, during his side’s Coppa Italia semi-final first leg 2-1 victory against Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

Pirlo explained that there is no contract clause that says Ronaldo can’t be substituted during a match.

Ronaldo was visibly unhappy to be replaced by Alvaro Morata with 14 minutes remaining, but Pirlo is now saying that he wanted to keep the 35-year-old fresh for Sunday’s Serie A match against Roma.

Two goals from Ronaldo gave Pirlo’s men the victory against Inter Milan at San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez did score a goal for Antonio Conte’s side.

Juventus will face Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg tie next week Tuesday in Turin.

“It’s normal that when you go out in a match like this, you want to play to help the team,” Pirlo told Rai Sport.

“There is no contract clause that says he [Cristiano Ronaldo] can’t be subbed off. He knows he is a fundamental player for us but to get his breath back, he must always be at the top.

“He proved it with his performances after some criticism. He couldn’t have done better than that.

“I said [to him] that he had to rest, we have an important match on Saturday. He has played many consecutive games, every now and then a little rest is good for him.”

Pastor Tunde Bakare reveals details of conversation with Sunday Igboho

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, has revealed that he spoke with Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, amid the Fulani herdsmen crisis rocking the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

Bakare, during an Instagram Live Chat with media mogul, Dele Momodu, on Tuesday, claimed he pleaded with Igboho to avoid a bloodbath.

Igboho had issued a seven-day quit notice to the herdsmen in Ibarapa and enforced same. There have been reprisals since the incident.

Bakare said, “Immediately, Sunday Igboho gave that ultimatum, I knew there was trouble if nothing was done immediately. And he carried out what he said he would carry out.

“What did I do? As an individual, I found a way of reaching out to him (Igboho). I have never met him before, never spoken to him before but I reached out to him and after a while, he called me and I said, I appeal to you by the mercies of God, two wrongs cannot make a right, you have proved your point, let us find alternative solution so that there would be no bloodbath.

“He promised to come and see me in Lagos and I had made preparations for him to come but unfortunately, his father took ill and he had to take him to the hospital.

“I also followed to ensure I prayed for the father. I told him, I am not saying you are right or you are wrong, that is not the issue but please, if you carry out this threat, it would lead to something bigger than you and you do not want to go down in history as someone who had good intention of defending the rights of his people but ended up bringing them a bloodbath.

“He thanked me and then he said he would find time to come to Lagos.”

Edo will regain its position as education hub in Nigeria – Gov Obaseki

Edo will regain its position as education hub in Nigeria – Gov Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, on Tuesday, in Abudu, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state, assured that the state would regain its position as the education hub in Nigeria.

Obaseki gave the assurance shortly after inspecting the current construction work of the College of Education in Abudu, which he said would focus on the training of teachers for pre-primary and primary schools.

Recall that there are three Colleges of Education in Edo — Igueben College of Education, the one in Abudu and that located at Afuze.

According to the governor, Igueben will focus on training teachers who will teach technical subjects, and the one in Afuze will focus on special education.

“We are expecting that Abudu will be open to students before July this year. It’s almost ready for occupation. We are just finalizing the faculty, the accreditation team has been here and am quite impressed with the quality and pace of work.

“It has been an unusual year. In the last one year, not much has happened. The contractors have to leave the site to protect their workers; the supply chain has been disrupted, but in spite of the delay, you will agree with me that a lot has been achieved.

“That work has progressed at a pace slightly ahead of what we expected because of coronavirus. Some of the other campuses have students, Igueben has students, we are scaling up the number of students by expanding the number of facilities,” he said.

He further assured that the state is in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the government of Korea.

“The right facilities will be put in this place so that we can train teachers practically in the use of technology, using technology to train these students and imbibing in them the culture of technology from a tender age,” he added.

Attack on Fulani may bring Nigeria down – Ex-presidential candidate, Bashir Othman Tofa warns

Attack on Fulani may bring Nigeria down – Ex-presidential candidate, Bashir Othman Tofa warns

Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, former presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention, NRC, in the 1993 presidential election, has expressed concern over alleged attacks on northners, especially the Fulani in Southern part of Nigeria.

He explained that it was unacceptable and a plan by enemies of the nation to initiate violent crisis that may lead to the destruction of the country.

Tofa, in a statement, observed that the tension is beginning to brew, saying that if revenge attacks on Southerners begins in the North, it would be difficult to control.

The elder statesman noted that the mayhem seen almost every day of killings and maiming of people of Northern extraction, including the Fulani, in some other parts of the country, is totally unacceptable.

He observed that, “There is clearly a nefarious plan by the enemies of this potentially great country to initiate a violent crisis that may lead to its destruction.”

Alhaji Bashir Tofa noted that “the enemies are from within and outside, some well-known by our Security Agencies”, stressing that “they are more determined than ever to set us against each other, so that we may get to a point of no return when the conflagration begins.”

The former presidential candidate called on the President to “take the insecurity and the tribal lynching very seriously, and put up urgent measures to deal with them without any more delays.”

He explained that if any Nigerian would not be allowed to live freely and conduct their lives and businesses in any part of the country without being disturbed or molested or even killed, then no one should be allowed to settle and prosper anywhere else.

According to him, “if that were to be the case, then, we have no country”, adding that “that is how serious it is and that is what our enemies desire, and that is why we must not allow them by our inaction.”

He observed, “Those foolish leaders and their stupid hirelings who encourage the expulsion of other Nigerians from their States, should remember that their own indigenes also live in other parts. They must stop, or the law should stop them by all means necessary.”

2023: Igbos don’t have numbers to produce Nigeria’s next president – Tunde Bakare

2023: Igbos don’t have numbers to produce Nigeria’s next president – Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church in Lagos, has said the South-East does not have the numbers yet, to produce a Nigeria President of Igbo extraction.

Bakare stated this on Tuesday night, during an Instagram Live session with media mogul, Dele Momodu.

According to the outspoken cleric, the Igbo would need a ‘handshake’ between the North and South, because of the way the country is structured.

“The Igbos are my brothers and sisters, God bless them, I love them and I care about them. They should also come to mainstream politics because APGA as a party cannot win a presidential election in Nigeria.

“Yes, every citizen of this country can aspire to that position regardless of ethnic personality and I will be too glad to see an Igbo president. But let us always remember that democracy is a ruthless game of numbers and if you don’t have the numbers you cannot continue to shout marginalisation.

“You should join mainstream politics and find a way of reaching out to others to form some kind of alliance or merger that will produce a victory at the poll,” Bakare said.

President Buhari told to give Fulani herdsmen funds to buy lands in Southern Nigeria

President Buhari told to give Fulani herdsmen funds to buy lands in Southern Nigeria

Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has tasked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to do more than it is doing presently to address the burning issue of insecurity in the country.

MURIC also advised Miyetti Allah to take responsibility and show good leadership by re-organizing its members into cooperatives and ask the Federal Government for bailouts to buy huge portions of land where they can set up ranches and graze freely.

The group wants the Federal Government to give the cattle rearing industry enough funds to buy land for the establishment of ranches.

According to MURIC, the Federal Government can ban open grazing after the bailout fund has been released.

The suggestion was contained in a press statement circulated among the media on Wednesday by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“The Federal Government still has some options open to it after the state governments in the South rejected the ideas of ranches and rugas,” the statement added.

“In our own view, the state governments who rejected the idea of donating land for ranches and ruga settlements did so because nobody was prepared to pay for such land and FG showed no intention to do so.

“It will be a horse of another colour if herders and cow owners buy land across the country for grazing. It should be a private project and a business venture just like all other businesses.

“Northern traditional leaders have a role to play in persuading herders and cow owners to change their mindset and become willing to operate ranches.

“Concerning financial capacity, this is where FG should come in. FG must be prepared to stoop in order to conquer. A huge bailout must be granted herders and cow owners to enable them buy land and set up ranches.”

“Such a bailout is not new and the herders/farmers conundrum necessitates it. After all, banks, airlines, private vehicle producing companies, petroleum importers and even farmers have received subsidies, bailouts and waivers in the past. It is now the turn of herders and cow owners and the time to do it is now,” MURIC said.

The group noted that farmers cannot be blamed for complaining about herdersmen activities on their farm lands, adding that the crimes being committed by some of the cattle rearers cannot be tolerated by any community in the country.

MURIC noted that open grazing and the movement cows on foot has become anachronistic and counter-productive, insisting that farmers need a peaceful environment and a guaranty of security for both their crops and their persons.

The group, however, said that the clashes between herdersmen and farmers across the country is neither religious nor ethnic.

“Therefore, our message to Miyetti Allah is this: ‘The governments and people of the South West, South South and South East are not just trying to start any quarrel with you or with your cows. No farmer can be happy with those who lead cows to destroy his crops.

“Miyetti Allah must take responsibility. Show good leadership by re-organizing your members into cooperatives and ask FG for bailouts to buy huge portions of land where they can set up ranches and graze freely.

“The problem on ground can be resolved if FG shows willingness to give bailout funds to herders and cow owners. State governments should also spend part of their security vote on the project.

“Any issue that constitutes security threat qualifies for a share of the security vote. Unfortunately our governors heap the whole blame on the presidency, as if they have no business solving security problems in their states,” it said.

DAILY POST reported yesterday that Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba activist, stormed troubled areas in Yewaland, Ogun State, in continuation of his anti – killer herdsmen battle in Yorubaland.

He had vowed that all killer-herdsmen will be evicted from all parts of Yoruba land starting from Igangan, a town in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Igboho stormed the state after the residents of Yewa, Abeokuta North, Odeda and some parts of Ijebu decried what they termed the inability of the Abiodun-led government to tame the killer herdsmen.

However, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun said his government did not seek the help of Igboho to tackle insecurity caused by the activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state.

Also, in order to find solutions to the lingering insecurity in many states in the country, South East and South West Governors had recently reinstated ban on open grazing and the movement of cattle by foot.

Inter Milan vs Juventus: Cristiano Ronaldo makes football history after Coppa Italia win

Inter Milan vs Juventus: Cristiano Ronaldo makes football history after Coppa Italia win

Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, on Tuesday night, made football history in his side’s Coppa Italia semi-final first leg 2-1 victory over Inter Milan.

Ronaldo’s brace against Inter Milan gave Andrea Pirlo’s men an edge ahead of the second leg semi-final tie next Tuesday in Turin.

Lautaro Martinez did score a goal for Antonio Conte’s men at San Siro.

Ronaldo’s two goals against Inter Milan means the Portugal captain now stands alone as football’s most prolific goalscorer, Marca reports.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star now have 763 career goals, a figure that beats the 762 of Josef Bican and Pele.

Bican and Pele’s records have been disputed, but there’s no confusion over Ronaldo’s goals.

Ronaldo netted 5 goals for Sporting, 118 for Manchester United, 451 for Real Madrid, 87 for Juventus and 102 for Portugal.

However, various sources give Bican up to 805 goals, but Marca has only counted goals in the professional or similar category.

Romario has 740 goals, while Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has scored 720 goals to make the top five list.

Ronaldo’s position in the history books is secured according to their records, for now at least.

The Juve number 7 will now hope to continue his impressive display for the Old Lady when they take on Roma this weekend in a Serie A fixture.

FG explains why Buratai, Abubakar, others will not be probed

FG explains why Buratai, Abubakar, others will not be probed

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said there will be no need to probe immediate-past service chiefs, because “where there are infractions, there are internal regulations and internal mechanisms to address them.”

Mohammed also slammed those asking for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to probe the former service chiefs, saying such is “unpatriotic”.

He stated this on Tuesday, while speaking on a Radio Nigeria programme, Politics Nationwide.

Last week, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed four new service chiefs.

They took over from the ex-service chiefs — General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin (Chief of Defence Staff); Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Chief of Army Staff); Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Chief of Naval Staff); and Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (Chief of Air Staff).

But the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some Nigerians have since demanded that Olonisakin, Buratai, Ibas and Abubakar be probed, to unravel circumstances behind the security lapses during their tenure.

However, Mohammed said, “To the best of my knowledge, our service chiefs obey the rules of engagement.

“Where there are infractions, there are internal regulations and internal mechanisms to address them.

“Those who are calling for the ex-service chiefs to be invited to ICC are unpatriotic people.”

NIN: Banning of sim cards sale, registration unreasonable, cruel – Dele Momodu

NIN: Banning of sim cards sale, registration unreasonable, cruel – Dele Momodu

Veteran journalist and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, has lambasted the Nigerian Government for banning the sale of new sim cards.

The Federal Government through the ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, had recently suspended the sale, registration and activation of SIM cards following the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage.

But Momodu is of the view that the decision has rendered not less than two million Nigerian youth jobless.

The former presidential candidate described the decision as unreasonable and cruel, wondering how a country could shut down its economy because of mere national identity registration.

“How can a country shut down economic activities for months by banning the sale of new sim cards for voice and data because of a mere NIN registration!!” Momodu tweeted.

“Why are we so unreasonably cruel in a country with an army of unemployed youths… We need deliverance…”

The Federal Government on Tuesday extended the National Identity Number, NIN, registration deadline by 8 weeks

“The ongoing National Identification Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) integration exercise has been extended by 8 weeks, with a new deadline of April 6, 2021,” the statement said.

This development means that Sim cards dealers will at least have to wait for another 8 weeks before doing business unless the government rescinds its decision.

Residents of Darmanawa protest seizure of their land by Emir of Kano

Hundreds of Kano residents have taken to the streets to protest the seizure of their lands which houses their Jumaat Mosque and Graveyard by the Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero.

The residents of Darmanawa in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, who are under the auspices of Darmanawa Layout Development Association, accused the Kano emirate council of attempting to illegally grab Y’ar Akwa Eid Praying Ground by Ado Bayero Royal City Trust Fund, an agency of the Kano emirate council.

Addressing journalists at the premises of the land yesterday, Chairman of the eid ground committee, Barrister Tijjani Yahaya alleged that the emirate was planning to snatch the eid ground, located at Darmanawa layout and convert it to residential plots for commercial purpose.

He explained that the land was donated by the late Emir, Ado Bayero, to be used as eid praying ground and subsequently gazetted by the Kano State government following the creation of Darmanawa Layout in the early 80s.

Bar. Yahaya said the association first scuttled an attempt to encroach the land in 2019 when it petitioned the Bureau for Land Management when there was an attempt to encroach on the land.

He said the piece of land is the only eid ground in the whole Tarauni Local Government Area.

The chairman also disclosed that the association, last year scuttled another attempt by the Ado Bayero Royal City Trust Fund to illegally take over the land, adding that they had approached the emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero to wade into the matter.

Yahaya added that the Emir had then asked the warring parties to maintain peace and order for an investigation into the matter.

He further disclosed that in an attempt to protect the land from illegal grabbing and encroachment, the association also wrote a petition to the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Agency in October 2020.

“While we were awaiting the outcome of these petitions, the representatives of the Ado Bayero Royal City Trust Fund tried to forcefully take over the eid ground which we successfully scuttled the attempt on December 30, 2020.

“We, therefore, challenge and call upon the Ado Bayero Royal City Trust Fund to provide any evidence of ownership of the said eid ground, which has been designated as public on plan number TP/UDB/18 by the then Kano State Urban Development Board as gazetted by the Kano state government,” he said.

Bar. Yahaya also said the association had intimated the emirate council of a reminder to its petition, but to its dismay, it saw Police officers deployed to give cover for a team of labourers brought to cut down the trees in the land on Monday.

“The large consignment of armed officers under the command of a superintendent of Police besieged our layout and the whole community in the latter part of yesterday, 1st February 2021 and gave cover to a team of people with cutlasses who proceeded to cut down all the trees that have been grown on the eid ground for over 15 years and provide shade to the teeming members of the congregation during the eid prayer sessions.

“When we approached the SP, he informed us that the order for the exercise came from the Commissioner of Police, Kano State. We intend to seek for an audience with the CP to brief him on our position on the matter,” He said

He also stated that the association would do everything within the ambition of the law to protect and prevent illegal encroachment and conversion of the eid ground into commercial residential plots.

“On behalf of the teeming members of the larger community within and around this sacred ground for this and other generations yet to be born to continue to benefit from the intended purpose for which this eid praying ground was donated by the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero,” he stated.
